The Boyfriend by Freida McFadden

The Hook
The name Freida McFadden has been the talk of every book club lately. Everywhere I go, I overhear shoppers asking for her books – and yes, I was one of them. This isn’t the first book I’ve read by Freida, and it certainly won’t be the last. Her talent for writing is undeniable. In fact, her bestselling novel The Housemaid is even getting its own movie adaptation – I already have my wallet ready for ticket sales!

Much like Melodie Campbell, Freida also has a real knack for eye-catching book covers. I already had a positive impression of her stories, so when I stumbled across a cover featuring a bloody tie with her name in bold, it became an instant purchase.

Summary
Sydney is a single woman living in New York City, ready to mingle but struggling in the dating world. She lives in a tiny apartment alongside one of her closest friends. After ending things with her last serious boyfriend – who seemed to choose his career over her – she tries again by downloading Cynch, a dating app exclusive to New Yorkers. Unfortunately, things don’t go smoothly, with one of her dates even turning into a stalker.

When she finally meets “Mr. Right,” her fairytale quickly unravels as a string of unsolved murders shakes the city. Determined to uncover the truth, Sydney takes on the role of a makeshift detective – only to discover dark secrets buried in a bloody past.

Favourite Thing
Freida McFadden is a master of multi-character storytelling. This book alternates between two seemingly unrelated viewpoints, only to weave them together in a seamless, clever way. The structure keeps readers on their toes, offering clues from both perspectives and daring you to solve the mystery before the grand reveal.

Is this book for you?

  • Love multiple POVs? This book has two.
  • Enjoy endless twists and turns? Get ready to spin in circles.
  • Like your murder mysteries with a dash of romance? There’s plenty of spice here.

Snack Pairing
Pair this novel with a glass of Merlot rosé and a hearty casserole. I know, I know, “Who eats casserole while reading?” But trust me, it works. This story has a bit of everything: spice, death, love, hate, fear, intrigue (and yes, casserole even makes an appearance in the book). The Merlot brings a soft, delicate vibe that mirrors Sydney’s sweet, feminine personality.

Final Thoughts
This book is addictive and will absolutely keep you guessing. If you pride yourself on solving mysteries before the big finale, you’ll find this one a real challenge – Freida is brilliant at planting clues that lead you down the wrong path.

The characters are relatable, their storylines are engaging, and more than a few surprises are waiting along the way. The only real drawback is Sydney herself, while kind-hearted and sweet, she’s not exactly the sharpest pea in the pod. If you struggle with “naïve” protagonists, you may find yourself frustrated at times.

Overall though, this is an entertaining, twisty, and satisfying read.
